Activities

Stanford MRS functions as a launching pad for students interested in bringing materials related programs to Stanford or the community at large. Historically, these programs can be divided into outreach, professional development, and networking events. Check our site periodically or join our slack channel (Matsci Informal) to stay informed about upcoming events!

Lunch with Professors (ongoing)

Lunch with professors provides an opportunity for students in the materials science and engineering department to socialize with fantastic professors from the department outside the context of a classroom or a meeting. Every month a different professor is selected to have lunch with a small group of students. These events have provided the opportunity for students and professors to discuss topics ranging from the history of the MS&E department at Stanford to light aviation to the future of college education. Funding is generously provided by the SPICE grant and the department. Inter-departmental Mixers

MSE & Psychology - (11/15/20)

Escaping the cold, students from the MSE department and Psychology department had a mixer at the A3C ballroom complete with burritos, drinks, games, and music!

ChemE Mixer (01/17/20)

Returning for the second year, a Trivia Mixer with the MSE and ChemE departments took place in the Shriram Tea Room. Teams competed for Coupa gift card prizes on topics ranging from Stanford trivia to obscure symbols!

MatSci Mentors

Every academic year, MRS organizes a mentorship program where we pair up 3rd+ year grad student mentors with 1st-2nd year mentees. Our goal is to build a well-connected network of MatSci grad students and a supportive community within the department through one-on-one relationships and group mentoring events.

Visit Weekend

MRS Members assist the department in planning, organizing, and executing visit weekend for prospective graduate students. It's our mission to make the visit weekend as low-stress, informative, and fun as possible!

Welcome Back BBQ (09/24/19)

Kicking off the start of the school year, Stanford MRS hosted its annual Welcome Back BBQ to welcome back returning students as well as incoming students! This event is a great way for new students to meet older students from different groups in the department while enjoying burgers and hotdogs.

MSE Halloween Party (10/31/19)

Every year, the MSE department works with Stanford MRS to organize an annual Halloween Party. By far the most entertaining event is the costume contest, where visitors vote for their favorite costume using none other than candy corn!

MRS Winter Retreat (12/13/19)

We had our first winter retreat this year! On top of an amazing and delicious potluck, each person brought hilarious gifts to swap in a crazy and hectic White Elephant game

Stanford vs. Northwestern Tailgate (08/31/19)

This year we had our first football tailgate for Stanford vs. Northwestern! We found a nice spot in the shade by the stadium to set up food and drinks while tossing a football around and playing other games. Afterwards, we all headed towards the game and watched as Stanford emerged victorious with a 17-7 win. Here’s the happy-looking, Stanford-cheerin’ (for the most part) crew.
